Life Health Improvement Basics

In 1999 I opened an exclusive TMJ treatment office dedicated to helping patients recover from chronic pain conditions including migraines, dizziness, jaw pain, tinnitus, neck pain, and facial pain. Since that time I have noticed the amazing improvement that my treatments have made for my patients’ overall health. Eliminating pain and returning patients to a normal life is professionally rewarding for me. It has also helped me to realize the total health impact that dentistry can make for our patients.

The concept of Total Body Dental Health (TBDH) has emerged as a solid field in medicine. Can your oral structures really have a large impact on your health? As a craniofacial pain expert I have noted the direct oral-systemic connection. Besides pain therapy there are other modalities of care in dentistry that can help you achieve high levels of health. We all want to feel and function better. TBDH can help.

As humans we constantly seek to gain pleasure and avoid pain. It is part of our basic survival. We all want to feel better, look better, and function at a high capacity….devoid of pain and sickness. This allows us the opportunity to gain pleasure. We see people around us who seem to have boundless energy, function at high performance levels, and have enthusiastic attitudes. We may wonder how one human can be so healthy while another is always suffering from some sort of ailment. More often than not those of us who live below optimal health are often lacking some basic knowledge or insight.

Better health comes from some very simple basic principles. Can our basic necessities be aiding OR causing some of our health ailments, including headaches and migraines? Our survival depends on 3 basics:

  1. AIR
  2. WATER
  3. FOOD

Of course clothing and shelter are important, but we are not lacking in those areas.

Without these basics we cannot survive. But what are we personally doing to our health? What is our environment doing to our health? Let’s look at these from some simple perspectives.

First, the QUALITY OF AIR continues to be ruined by a very toxic world that we all live in. Pollution, chemicals, auto emissions, ozone depletion, cellular/wireless waves, and electronic transmissions all add to the depletion of oxygen and decrease the quality of the air that we breathe. Although you cannot hide from this you can take some countermeasures to improve the quality of the AIR that you breathe.

  1. Use a high quality room air filter/ozonator in your bedroom to clean your air.
  2. Keep your windows closed at night
  3. Change your furnace filter at least every other month
  4. Add healthy plants like Aloe Vera or Lavender in your bedroom
  5. Turn off or put the cell phones in another room, away from your bedroom
  6. Use organic cleaning products to clean your home
  7. Don’t leave your TVs or electronics on when you sleep

Adults require 7 hours or more of “good sleep” each night for optimal health. Sleeping less than 7 hours or achieving “poor sleep” can be detrimental to your well-being and lead to: headaches, heart problems, depression, obesity, high blood pressure, low metabolism, and even strokes. 30% of the population reports being sleep deficient. If you are depriving yourself of sleep make the change now to prevent health issues later. If you are getting at least 7 hours of sleep and you still feel tired, with low energy levels, then consider that the quality of your rest may be affected by structural or digestive problems. If you have large tonsils, obstructive nasal passage (thin nose or can’t easily breathe through your nose), or sinus issues, you may be struggling to breathe at night. Quality sleep requires proper oxygenation!

Utilizing Eccovision technology we can easily screen you for sleep apnea and obstruction issues in less than 5 minutes. Should you require a sleep study, today it’s as simple as 1-2-3 by visiting www.1800cpap.com and ordering a sleep study test that you can complete in the privacy of your home. Bring the results to our office and we can review them with you to see if you need professional help. Improving your sleep will have many positive effects for your health including increasing your energy levels and metabolism.

Other factors that can ruin your sleep can include grinding and clenching your teeth.

Use Breathe Right Nasal strips or Nasal Cones to open your nasal passages. Your sinuses produce nitric oxide which is one of the most important elements that your body uses for metabolism, fighting infections, and keeping you healthy. If you struggle to breathe through your nose (you are a mouth breather) then you will not get any nitric oxide. This can lead to many health ailments including frequent colds and flus.
Do breathing exercises if you don’t frequent the gym often. Deep breath in, count to 10, exhale! Repeat this at least 10 times every hour. The deeper the breath, the better. It helps to expand lung volume and oxygenation.
Buy a good mattress. No matress under $1500 will provide proper support for your spine.

Second, the quality of our WATER has also been ruined by many factors. Tap water is full of chemicals and pollutants. Most water filters can provide enough efficiency to give you clean water to drink. Even a $30 filter is good enough. Bottled water is full of phenols and cancer causing chemicals. Stay away from bottled water! Distilled water is pure water and the healthiest hydration for your body. You can buy your own distilling unit as you should never drink water from plastic containers. Also, you cannot drink distilled water solely. Tap water that is filtered still provides the electrolytes that your body needs, but a few cups of distilled water each day is great at removing toxins from your digestive system.

Many of us would like to have a healthier body and function at a higher capacity, free of ailments, free of pain, free of disease. Unfortunately, this is not always possible. If you want to take the next step towards more optimal health you must begin by making some lifestyle changes. These changes include diet and attitude awareness. This can be like pulling teeth, no pun intended. Not many of us can claim to embody only healthy habits. Habits come from a “comfort zone” of the brain that doesn’t concern itself much with value judgments. We know that donuts and candy are bad but they make us feel good so we eat them anyways. Many habits are thus born out of the desire to gain pleasure. The downside of this is that many of these habits often lead to poor health. Yet we hold onto these habits because change itself is stressful.

It has often been said that people will not change until the stress of change is exceeded by the stress of staying the same. A heart attack is a classic example of a person who will trade pizza and burgers for salads, in most cases. However, the “old ways” are a powerful element to be reckoned with. Even after lifestyle changes are made the old ways can prevail.

Do what you’ve always done, and you’ll get what you’ve always gotten! From a practical perspective, don’t waste money on any health improvement programs until you are ready to make a change. It is common for illnesses to recur repeatedly when the desire to “feel healthy” is stronger than the actual willingness and act of doing something about it. Changes that must be made can require a lot of energy and strong-will. We are always looking for the new diet formula, a magic pill in a bottle, or some new drug to make it easy. It does not work that way. Never has, never will.

Recovery from any health conditions means giving the body sufficient time and resources to heal itself. Every message from the heart, mind and soul translates as instructions to the physical body. When people come to realize how dutifully compliant their bodies really are, they may temper their thoughts with more respect. It does not happen overnight. Time is needed. Our general rule of thumb is that: one month of recovery is needed for every year of chronic illness! So, if you are ready for a change: follow these guidelines!

The typical American diet can cause injury and stress to your body, while blocking your body’s healing processes. Choosing to upgrade to a healthy diet is one of the most life enhancing decisions you can make. A healthy diet can prevent and reverse illness. Diet changes must be made gradually, yet with ruthless energy and determination. What you eat has a significant effect on your energy levels, your overall health, and your ability to heal. The American diet has become overly convenient. We fill our bodies with choices of food that are quick to prepare or easy to “grab and eat”. This can leave us devoid of proper nutrition and balance, as many of these foods lack proper nutrients. We then turn to coffee, vitamins, herbs, and other products hoping that they will make up for our poor choices. Unfortunately, even these can make things worse as the body normally cannot process them efficiently.

Health begins with your digestive system. Besides emotional problems, most illnesses start and end with your gut. We will address emotions and thoughts later in this handout but for right now we must start with practical solutions.

Think of your digestive system as a highway. Cars enter and exit the highway at numerous on/off ramps. These ramps are analogous to your organs. The pancreas, liver, and gallbladder are like entry ramps while the lungs, kidneys, and rectum are like exit ramps. Consider what happens when a crash occurs on the highway and causes a large backup. No cars can enter and few can exit the highway. It is the same thing with your digestive system. Give it chemicals and non-nutritive foods and you have a vehicle crash. The organs get stuck and they stop functioning normally. The only way to start your way to a healthy body is to clean out the crash and get the highway and ramps working again. Turning to vitamins and other promoted fads is usually a waste of money and time. These end up being similar to more vehicles trying to enter the congested highway. They just add more to the problem.

If you have low energy, tire easily, are prone to flus, colds, or other ailments you most likely have a car crash in your digestive system. The best way to start a nutritional and body healing program is with DIGESTIVE detoxification. This is also called DIGESTIVE CLEANSING.

This requires your determination to clean your digestive system which in turn will detoxify and cleanse your entire body. To keep things simple you must remember that you have to “make up” for years of filling your body with chemicals and junk that your body does not need. Due the following to start the process: Go to nearest organic food store and purchase a 30 day Total Body Cleanse box. Some stores may only offer 7 day or 2 week options but it is best to try and find the 30 day Total Body Cleanse. After the 30 day cleanse, start to implement the following habits:

  1. Drink 1 cup Prune Juice or Unfiltered Apple Juice with 1 tsp of Psyllium husk every evening
  2. Drink 1 cup freshly juiced Celery juice every morning when you wake up
  3. During the day eat at least 1 cup of organic fruits daily: papayas, berries, mango, watermelon, grapefruit, apricots, apples, figs, and dates.
  4. During the day eat at least 2 cups of romaine lettuce, squash, asparagus, kale, spinach. Flavor them with olive oil, peppermint, and sea salt (this being the most important.)
  5. Drink at least 1 cup of Lemon Balm or Licorice Tea or Red Clover Tea each day ( put 1 tsp of colloidal silver in any of the teas if you are omitting below Morning Drink)

In about 5 weeks of starting the Detox program YOU WILL START TO SEE HUGE BENEFITS! You will then be ready to consider Bionetic treatment.

You must also make one basic change: CUT OUT THE SUGAR AND THE JUNK! Read the labels of your foods and start avoiding anything that has added sugar or high fructose corn syrup. Splenda and Nutrasweet and all artificial sweeteners are considered sugars in this program.

If you do NOT change any bad diet habits then do not waste your time with these instructions.

Continuing to eat junk food, dairy, white breads, burgers, wheat, soy, corn, canola oil, processed sugar, eggs, pork, farmed fish, gluten, MSG, natural flavors, artificial sweeteners, L-carnitine, whey, whey protein, BREADS, white rice, chips, popcorn, COOKIES, and crackers …would be analogous to trying to shovel your driveway in the middle of a heavy snowfall.

You must also realize the importance of bacteria in your diet. The human body needs bacteria to survive and live. There are good bacteria (acidophilus, lactobacillus, etc) and then there are bad bugs. The good bugs will be destroyed by antibiotics, sugars, and preservatives. The bad bacteria will be fed by these. So, if you have ever taken antibiotics, or if you like sweets, you have a 100% chance that most of the good bacteria in your body have been destroyed and you have an overgrowth of bad bugs which cause you to have hunger cravings and excess fat storage. Furthermore, you will have an overgrowth of Yeasts, fungus, and molds which are great at sending signals to your brain to make you eat more sugars. One of the bacteria that causes sugar craving signals to your brain is called methanobrevibacter smithii and this is one bacteria that loves Splenda and enjoys making you hungry for more.

Ghrelin is called the “hunger hormone”, also known as lenomorelin (INN). It is a peptide hormone produced by ghrelinergic cells in the gastrointestinal tract which functions as a neuropeptide in the central nervous system. Besides regulating appetite, ghrelin also plays a significant role in making us seek and hoard food. When bad bacteria take over your body, the Ghrelin is increased in activity by these bugs. These bad bugs also shield themselves in your body by creating mucus coatings in your GI. These mucus coatings are very hard to eliminate and some people may need more aggressive methods of cleaning the system…above and beyond these instructions.

The only way to increase the level of good bacteria in your body, and thereby lower the level of bad bacteria, is to follow good diet habits and cut out the sugars.

Before you begin with a new eating plan, please realize that the food supply in our country is produced with high levels of toxins and you MUST AVOID the following:

MSG, nitrates, nitrites, sulfites preservatives, colorings, carrageenan, BHA, BHT: all cancer causing chemicals added to keep foods on the shelves longer! If you eat foods out of boxes with long expiration dates, you are filling your body with chemicals.

Sweeteners, such as Splenda, Nutrasweet, Equal: all cancer producing chemicals that have no nutritional value and break down proper body functions by increasing bad bacteria. Avoid diet products that contain these sweeteners (Diet Coke, Diet Pepsi, diet-most-everything!) Switch to Stevia or use small amounts of honey.

Hydrogenated oils: evils that are added to foods to make them taste better. Margarine and shortening are made from these and are to be eliminated. Restaurant food is full of these oils so learn to prepare your own meals. Restaurants are unhealthy. You must also avoid frying your foods! Learn to broil, boil, bake, and pressure cook instead. Choose Olive Oil for your cooking

Spices and natural flavorings: when you see these words on food labels realize that these have nothing to do with any natural products such as pepper, salt, or paprika. They are FDA approved labeling for chemicals being added to foods by manufacturers in order to increase your appetite and get you addicted to the company’s particular brand of food.

Pesticides and herbicides: although helpful in preventing food-borne illnesses they are toxins! Organic foods do not have these chemicals!

High fructose corn syrup: the most common additive to foods, designed to sweeten your food and get you “hooked” to the taste of the product. It will slowly destroy your pancreas and entire health! This product alone is responsible for many of our ailments. They have tried to relabel it with other names but don’t be fooled. Read the labels and see how many grams of sugar each serving has (for example a serving may be one ounce and it can contain 24 g of sugar; eat a few bites and you have consumed 100 g of sugar!). Buy Stevia or organic cane sugar instead of regular sugar for your cooking needs.

All Breads (GRAINS) are full of sugar and gluten and lectin. Cut out all grains (even if it says whole grain or whole wheat or natural grain, etc.) Look for Ezekiel bread instead as the lesser of evils.
Pastas (grains) are full of sugar. Try to limit them or buy the Spinach Pasta.

Soy and Milk

Beans and Tomatoes. You can peel tomatoes and eat the pulp as an alternative if you really like tomatoes, but avoid the skin. Beans and tomatoes are full of lectins which increase your appetite.
Coffee, Alcohol, and Pork. These are the 3 Horsemen! Coffee can have mold, alcohol will destroy your liver and increase fungi, while pork is full of toxins.

Cashews and Peanuts. Stick with Walnuts and Pistachios and limited Almonds.
Please realize that in order to start your health program you must take some initiative and keep things as simple as possible. First, read the labels of the food in your cupboard and refrigerator. Throw out anything that has any of the above compounds. Second, shop for organic products. Even local grocery stores are adding many organic products to their shelves. Focus on finding organic food.

Next, follow some simple rules:

Again: Drink plenty of Filtered Water: at least half an ounce of water for every pound you weigh, daily! Do NOT ever drink bottled water or straight tap water.
Eat lots of RAW (uncooked) Organic Vegetables: broccoli, green/red peppers, cucumbers, carrots, squash, tomatoes, avocados, spinach, and other regional greens. Eat as many raw or lightly steamed vegetables and fresh salads as you can digest. Season them with sea salt, extra virgin olive oil, apple cider vinegar, Garlic, ginger, cayenne pepper, chili peppers, and onions. The key is RAW or slightly steamed. If you cook vegetables you lose their enzyme ability. Enzymes are needed for the digestive process to help the pancreas and gall bladder.

Eat the right amount of Proteins: the best sources are turkey (contains L-tryptophan, a serotonin producing amino acid which helps to stabilize headaches), wild-caught fish (halibut, mackerel, salmon), lamb, cow, and chicken. Avoid farm-raised salmon, tuna. Excellent organic vegetarian protein sources include free range eggs, tempeh, red lentils, and chickpeas.

Consume Complex Carbohydrates: for sustained energy, eat complex carbohydrates in the form of legumes, red potatoes, squash, yams, and brown rice. Limit your overall carbohydrate intake to 30 percent or less of the foods you eat at each meal.

Again: Purchase a room air filter/ionizer. You need CLEAN air/oxygen for your lungs.

Consult with your doctor regarding your Vitamin D and Calcium and Magnesium levels. Many chronic pain patients experience low Vitamin D, calcium, and magnesium levels. Healing requires the proper amount of these critical nutrients for recovery. Your doctor must draw blood for your basic study and ask the lab for the additional specific test for Vitamin D.

Add one Digestive Enzyme with every meal. Most grocery and pharmacy stores carry these.

Add Flaxseed, Chia Seeds, and Krill Oil to the diet. Flaxseeds and Chia Seeds can be put into smoothies or oatmeal while Krill Oil supplements can be taken daily.

Eat one APPLE per day
Eat Sauerkraut and Pickles
Eat lightly steamed Asparagus and Cauliflower

Our program works best if you have followed these guidelines in order to start what we call: “Peeling The Onion.” Similar to peeling an onion, your health improvement can only be done by removing one layer of toxicity at a time. These instructions will help to remove a lot of the outer layers in order to allow us to get to the deeper problems.
