MVA Induced TMJ Craniofacial PainThis young lady was in a severe car accident 2 years before we saw her. She woke up a week after the accident in the hospital.She was thrown out of her car and it was a miracle that she survived. She had no broken bones in her head and neck and did not complain of any TMJ pain or headaches following the MVA. However, six months later her headaches started and along with pain in the TMjoints. She also developed popping and clicking, earaches, eye problems, neck pain, sinus congestion, etc. Her chiropractor referred her to us for a second opinion due to the fact that her headaches were becoming debilitating. Our x-rays revealed severe jaw joint compression. The patient was also suspected to have suffered a whiplash injury of her TMJ which tore the disks. We fabricated a repositioning appliance and within 4 weeks all of her pain subsided. She continues to wear her appliance, although orthodontic repositioning may be necessary in the future. She stated "I am not ready for braces, but I also find it impossible to live without my mouthpiece because if I take it out even for 2 minutes my pain returns."
