Displaced Jaw Bone Headache Pain Treatment Picture Southfield MI

Lower Jaw - Mandible Displacement

This lady suffered with migraines for over 20 years. She had been to every neurologist and expert from Los Angeles to New York City.

She had orthodontics performed by the leading orthodontist in Michigan. She had physical therapy, chiropractic care, and daily yoga classes. Nothing was working. She was desperate and had considered suicide.

Orthodontic Treatment Failure

As you can see in the adjacent photograph, the orthodontic care our patient received was inadequate. Her overbite should have been properly corrected.

Accurate Diagnosis

Our treatment was very simple. Transcranial x-rays showed a posterior/superior displacement of the lower jaw (mandible). This was due to the fact that she had a medium overbite. Her lower teeth fit under the top teeth by more than 3 mm above average.

This results in a condition where her upper teeth are unable to support her bite subsequently causing her mandible (lower jaw) to move up too far into the skull bone. This abnormal condition wears out the protective joint disk and starts the condylar head (end of the jaw bone) rubbing onto the underside of the skull bone. This, in turn, directly affects the brain tissue which normally lies less than 1/16 of an inch away from the jaw bone.

As the jaw functions over 5,000 times a day it keeps banging on this sensitive area of the brain. Unfortunately for MOST patients, they do not sense a disturbance in the joint due to the fact that this problem started out slowly many years ago.

Sometimes a pop and click is felt during teenage years, other times no apparent problem is noted within the TMJ area itself. It just keep getting worse and the only manifestation is a headache that keep progressing into migraines. That is why so many doctors and other professionals cannot diagnose the problem adequately or successfully. It's not readily apparent! Only transcranial x-rays or tomograms can detect and properly diagnose this problem.

Correct Diagnosis - Successful Treatment

Our patient was fitted with our standard decompression appliance. Her migraines resolved within 2 weeks. She did not desire to get a permanent cure with orthodotic means because she was too upset with her previous orthodontist who did not alleviate her symptoms. She is currently wearing this appliance during sleep and has not experienced any headaches for the first time in the last 20 years.

Many patients come to our office with multiple appliances and bite splints fabricated by their dentist or orthodontist. If these appliances are not alleviating your pain, it is probable that your appliance was fitted incorrectly for your specific problem. All of our appliances are custom made and fitted based on the measurements we take from the x-rays and the analysis we perform on your muscles and jaws.

Our patient called our office after 2 months of treatment and stated:
"I really don't need to see you guys any more. I have my life back, I have no headaches, I am able to go to work again, I can enjoy living a wholesome life once more..."
