Congenital Bone Deformity - Craniofacial Pain
Congenital Deformities are CommonThere probably isn't a person alive that doesn't have some kind of deformity somewhere on his/her person. Deformities in teeth shape, leg lengths, facial features, spinal characteristics, eye color, skin pigmentation... the list is literally infinite.Having eyes with two different colors or having 6 toes rather than 5 don't really impact a person's physical functioning. Deformities or abnormalities with leg length may, however... as would a deformity where cartilage is missing in one knee joint. Deformity Impact and AdjustmentA person with one leg shorter than the other can undergo surgery or be fitted with appliances to make up for the differences in length. A person with hearing loss can wear a hearing aid... vision acuity problems can be overcome with surgery or eyeglasses. As simplistic as these examples are... imagine having a minor or serious birth defect that is not corrected or adjusted for on a timely basis. The person with a shorter leg will develop curvature of the spine. The person with a hearing loss could fail to develop language or even the ability to speak. Deformities also impact the dynamics of migraine and cranifacial pain. Tinnitus and Migraine Pain: Craniofacial DeformityAt the time the adult patient presented in our office, he reportedly had been suffering since childhood with extremely sensitive ears. He would hide in closed rooms to avoid noise. In later years he chose a profession in laboratory research in order to avoid busy, loud environments that caused him to have headaches and earaches. During adulthood he suffered with "ghost" toothaches and jaw pain. He had several oral surgeries that were done in order to biopsy areas of the jaw that caused him abnormal and undiagnosed pain. None of the surgeries provided an answer or relief. He also had numerous root canals by dentists who believed that the cause of the pain were his teeth. Over the years several teeth were extracted due to his pain and discomfort. Initial examination quickly provided a surprising and much more accurate diagnosis. The patient had a congenital defect in the alignment of the jaws and skull bone. Basically, he was born with the problem. As he aged, the pain and discomfort worsened. Following much analysis it was determined by Dr. Halmaghi that certain physical forces operating between the opposing jaw structures needed adjustment. The decompression treatments provided an effective and quick elimination of his pain. For the most part, pain had been all but eliminated in about 14 days. In the patient's own words: "I did not believe you when your first told me about my problem. I had seen so many physicians, dentists, and therapists. I had numerous invasive and painful surgeries.
