Young Patient Photo Severe Overbite Ear Pain

Severe Congenital Overbite Induced Pain

This cute, young girl presented to our office with complaints of headaches and earaches. Her ENT surgeon had performed 3 ear surgeries to place ear tubes attempting to relieve her pain and discomfort. Unfortunately, her problem kept worsening and she was starting to lose her ability to hear.

In the 2nd photo, notice the deep overbite that she was born with. Many children have this problem. Some will also grind their teeth which worsens the jaw to jaw condition by wearing down the teeth.

Misdiagnosis - Medication Failures

As the teeth wear, the jaw joint gets unusual pressure due to the fact that the teeth cannot support the jaws. Physicians attempt to treat these problems with medications and surgeries, but fail to diagnose the underlying problem.

Changing - Opening the Bite

Compare the 2nd and 3rd pictures to see the before/after effects of her changed bite. All it took was 2 mm. of plastic bonded fillings to get her teeth to support her jaws better and take the stress out of her joints.

As soon as this was accomplished the patient returned to normal. No more headaches, no more earaches, no more needless surgeries.

Early Treatment for Overbite Problems

The same treatment protocol can be followed in young children with deep overbites in order to help them grow properly. The earlier this type of treatment is begun the healthier the child will grow. It also helps to diminish the need for more expensive orthodontic treatment later in life.

Note: these children must also be thoroughly evaluated for tonsil problems. Many will have large, inflammed, and sometimes infected tonsils which contributes to the problem. Often, it is necessary to have the tonsils removed in order to have succesful treatment outcome and prevent future growth problems.
